In all seriousness, thank you to these awesome people for providing their awesome likeness to help me test all the markdown features in the blog. Learning and using Zola has been… painful, sure, but that was mostly due to the circumstances I found it in. Zola (now) uses the Tera v2 templating engine, which is similar to Jinja2 and Django templates, and when I started rewriting my website to use Zola, the Tera documentation had features that weren't even implemented. “What?!” I was digging through source code and random template examples without finding any real great answers.

I was so confused until the great enderprism (whom you've seen in this blog post) helped me realize that Tera v2, the one with the cool new features such as custom components, turns out, was only included with Zola three days ago. It hadn't yet trickled down into my package manager, so I was using an old version of Zola with the documentation for the newer, breaking version. What a timing!

Besides that hiccup, it's been a great time! It comes with just enough features without feeling "bloated," it's BLAZINGLY FAST 🦀, it's powerful, extensible, and surprisingly easy to use, especially with its pre-made templates. Initially I chose it because, well... Rust ~~(BLAZINGLY FAST!!!!!!)~~, and I have yet to try out other SSGs (I've used 11ty briefly, though not enough to form an opinion on it), but it's way more than "just a rusty SSG".

Zola is a Static Site Generator I can absolutely recommend.

I have some minor gripes with it, mostly because I tend to overcomplicate things, but something I can talk about is the syntax. I understand that it's a templating engine, and that's it's main goal, so the syntax has to reflect that... but I'd just love if features like components could get a break from that syntax... For example, if I want to whisper like this, I have to create a custom component such as:

{ % component caption(style: string = "") -% }
  <span class="caption" style="{ {style} }">{ {body} }</span>
{ %- endcomponent % }

and then reference it by using

{ % <caption> % } a setup like this { % </caption> % }

Which... is not very visually appealing and is quite convoluted. Of course, I could shrink the word <caption> to something like <cap> or even just <c>, but at that point, with the amount of other special characters it just looks like a cypher. I have a bad habit of working whilst sleep-deprived and the last thing I need is to decrypt cyphers at 3:00AM. I wish I could at the very least use custom components without the { % setup and at best create custom markdown formatting, though I think the latter is less likely. This is obviously, as I said, a really tiny gripe of mine and doesn't really take away from the overall joy of using Zola.

Why am I saying all of this? I don't know, just wanted to test this blog's capabilities of long paragraphs. :]
